SLOW AND FAST GREENS
The speed of a green is indicated by the number of seconds a bowl takes to cover the distance from delivery until it comes to rest 27m from the front of the mat. On fast greens, where the surface is dry and smooth, the arc travelled by the bowl will be large so the bowl will take longer to cover the distance, perhaps 15 to 20 seconds. On slow greens, where the ground may be soft and the grass more lush, the arc will be more narrow and the bowl will cover a more direct route to the jack taking less time, perhaps 12 seconds.

TOUCHERS AND TOUCHERS
A bowl, which is not a toucher, comes into contact with the jack in the ditch. Can that bowl now be deemed a toucher?

Law 24  Touchers
No bowl will be a toucher if it plays onto, or comes into contact with, the jack when the jack is in the ditch.

ETIQUETTE: All players are asked to assist in returning mats, jacks and scoreboards at the close of play.

QUOTE: Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is.

THE DRIVING LEAD:
I will have to settle down;
Play the game my skippers way;
Because we're playing championships;
He won't let me drive today.
He will stand at the other end;
Smile at me for sure;
And say I'm hoping mate;
You won't drive any more.
I am tempted by the bowl;
That sits there on the jack;
I know it needs a little knock;
Or, perhaps a heavy wack.
I wish I was allowed;
To drive at it some way;
Bash it off the bowling green;
And win this game today.
I stand there on the mat;
With a look he really knows;
Just waiting for the skip to say;
"Why not have a go!"

Nationals
The Dorchester National Open began in Christchurch last Friday.
If you have SKY TV there is some bowls coverage.

ORDINARY PLAYERS CAN BEAT CHAMPIONS - Two little known combinations had their moments in the sun when they beat members of the New Zealand World Bowls squad at the Dorchester/Hyundai National Open Bowling Championships in Christchurch today. After Gary Lawson and Andrew Curtain – two of the finest bowlers this country has produced in the last decade or two, had wiped aside all opposition with cricket score results, Greymouth’s Roger Norton and Rick Day of Kaiapoi faced the daunting task of having to beat them in their last match, to qualify for post section play. But, showing that bowls is a sport in which any “ordinary” player can beat a champion on his day, Norton and Day not only beat Lawson and Curtain, they chalked up a commanding 21 – 12 win.

Fluid Intake
If you want to maintain maximum concentration during a game of bowls it is important you keep up your water intake. This becomes even more critical when playing for lengthy periods. "A sip on the water bottle every second end" is a good suggestion. Avoid alcohol because it is a diuretic (increases unwanted dehydration).

JACK GOES FORWARD:
This has already been in a newsletter this season but ..... at roll-up on Thursday something happened which made me think it might need repeating.

On the rink next to me a bowler drove, struck the jack which hit the face of the ditch then sprung back onto the rink and finished up about 3 metres in front of where it had originally been. The bowlers concerned weren't sure what to do and decided to call the end dead. Were they correct? (No - they weren't)

Law 30        Dead jack
If the jack is moved by a bowl in play, it is a dead jack if it:
·   passes above the face of the bank;
·   passes completely outside a side boundary of the rink of play;
·   comes to rest in any hollow in the face of the bank; or
·   comes to rest at a distance of less than 20 metres as measured in a straight line from the mat line.

DO YOU HAVE TO MARK EVERY TOUCHER?
(No - you don't)

Law 25        Marking a toucher
If, in the opinion of either skip or opponent or the marker, a toucher comes to rest in a position in which marking it would be likely to move the bowl or alter the head, the bowl should not be marked but nominated as a toucher instead.

ETIQUETTE: Bowls should not be kicked until the shot(s) has been decided.

Dorchester/Hyundai National Open Bowls Championships
(from Bowls NZ website)

Zalina New Women's Singles Champ:
Malaysia has produced the winner of the women’s singles at the Dorchester/Hyundai National Open Bowls Championships for the second consecutive year, with Siti Zalina Ahmad winning one of the most gripping finals in years to beat Nelsonian Marie Watson, 21 – 20 at the Papanui club last Friday.

Meyer Gets "Special" Title:
A delighted Russell Meyer admitted that winning the men’s singles title was something he’d always aimed at, after he dominated Johnsonville’s Brendon Gibson at the Dorchester/Hyundai National Open Bowling Championships at the Papanui greens in Christchurch last Friday. Meyer beat Gibson, 21 – 15, leading from the moment he took a three on the very first end.

Title No. 9 For Lawson:
By winning his ninth title in the men’s pairs at the Dorchester/Hyundai National Open Bowling Championships in Christchurch on Friday, outstanding Canterbury bowler Gary Lawson has given himself the chance of joining Nick Unkovich, next week, as the greatest national title winner in the history of the game. Before he and “old mate” Andy Curtain beat Kevin Robinson and Steve Posa in the final, 23 – 10, Lawson and the legendary Phil Skoglund, were locked together with eight titles, two behind Unkovich’s 10.

Babich, Crowe Take Women's Pairs Title:
The 2007/08 summer will be one Aucklanders Jo Babich and Bev Crowe will never forget, after taking the national women’s pairs title at the Dorchester/Hyundai National Open Bowling Championships in Christchurch on Friday, in their very first year as a combination. The pair from the Carlton-Cornwall club demolished the home town combination of Karin Ware and Maureen Doherty from Beckenham, 25 – 4, with the locals conceding defeat after only 16 ends.

If you want to win
you must practise

Be Selfish - Think Of Yourself
All opposition needs to be treated with respect. However whilst respect is essential, focusing on one’s own performance is the key to success. You have no control over how well or how poorly the opposition is going to perform. LEAVE THEM ALONE - play your own game.

Start with having good routines.
A pre shot routine could be:
1. Define the shot you are going to play,
2. Get the bowl in the hand correctly,
3. Establish the intended line,
4. Move onto the mat ensuring the anchor foot and body is pointing directly along the intended line,
5. Think calm and relaxed,
6. Put the feeling into your body of how fast you need to bowl the bowl,
7. A trigger or cue word to set the bowling action in motion,
8. Just relax you can’t do any more about it,
9. Analyse the result and what correction if any will be required with the next bowl.

CAN I WAIT TILL A BOWL FALLS OVER BEFORE I START MEASURING? – Sometimes after the last bowl has come to rest you think it might topple over and finish closer to (or further away from) the jack. Are you allowed to wait in the hope a bowl might fall over?
Law 40        Deciding the number of shots scored

1  The process of deciding the number of shots scored should not start until the last bowl required to be played in an end has come to rest, or 30 seconds after that if either skip or opponent in Singles asks for this 30-second period (for example, to see whether or not a bowl lying at an angle will fall of its own accord within that time).

2 If either skip or opponent in Singles has asked for a 30-second period, no bowl which is likely to fall should be secured during that period.

WHAT IF YOU ARE MEASURING AND A BOWL FALLS OVER?:
You are in the process of deciding the number of shots when a bowl falls over.

If a bowl falls of its own accord, it should be left in its new position while deciding the number of shots scored continues, and
all the shots agreed before the bowl fell will count.

ETIQUETTE: Do not sit on the edges of the green.

BOWLS MAXIMS:
A good skip can control his ship.
A good lead is always a need.
A bowl on the pitch is worth two in the ditch.
a long length requires more strength.
A rink game is a think game.
A back bowl may become a jack bowl.
A bowl much short will count for nought.
A chalk on your wood proves your bowling is good.
A certain one to you is better than a risky two.
A toucher on the jack; a couple at the back.
A good draw shot will win a lot.
Getting the shot matters a lot.
It's a great pleasure to win a close measure.

WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SENIOR SINGLES:
How many events begin with a big bunch of flowers sitting in the middle of the green? Saturday's Women's senior singles did just that. What a thoughtful greenkeeper we have! The weather could not have been more stunning and with flowers to welcome the women I knew we were in for a great weekend. The presence and impact of new bowlers was again felt and must surely be a healthy sign for our club. One "mature" player was overheard saying, "These Junior players are getting better every year". By the close of Day 1 nine players remained in contention, including four Juniors. Those with two lives included Maureen Parsons, Maree Turner and Noeline Gardiner. Mandy Boyd and Barbara ("comeback kid") Exeter had one life along with Paula Evans, Fay Johnson, Lois Hook and Linda Boyd.  The further the bowling went the better it became. Those women taking part can feel very proud of their bowling skills. By the close of play on Sunday three players, each with one life, were left. They are Maureen Parsons, Noeline Gardiner and Mandy Boyd.

Maureen and Noeline
will play the semifinal next Wednesday (16th) at 8.30 am
The winner will then play Mandy in the final.

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP TRIPLES:
The final for this event had been
scheduled for last Saturday morning but was postponed. It will be held at a future date.

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS:
In early November the Men's Championship Pairs had been whittled down to four pairs. Jon O'Shea / Frank Grantham had two lives intact. One lifers included Phil Young / Brian Annear, Jack Philip / Ross Hamilton and John McLaughlin / John Hanlen. This championship continued yesterday (Sunday). The high standard of bowling and the warm sunny conditions made enjoyable watching. The closely fought final was between Jon O'Shea / Frank Grantham and Phil Young / Brian Annear. Jon and Frank are to be congratulated on getting through with both lives intact. Phil and Brian came so close - well done.
Runners-up Winners
Brian Annear, Phil Young Frank Grantham, Jon O'Shea

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP FOURS:
Only two teams were left in this Championship from 17/18 November. Paul Selby's team (Jim Fitzsimons, Mike Madden, Johnny Ward) were left with one life while Bruce Mitchell's team (Peter Thomson, Ray Falvey, Bob Gray) started the day's play
with two lives.  In Game 1 Paul's team won convincingly which took one of Bruce's lives... but ... revenge is sweet as Bruce's team found out. They played steady consistent bowls and  are to be congratulated for winning the final.

Winners of Men's Championship Fours

Sevens:

B Division team
- had one more round to play on Saturday. Havelock North won a game against Heretaunga so that meant Taradale could not get enough points to clinch this Division. They are to be commended on coming a close 2nd. Well done!

Threes: This competition continued over the weekend.  One section was won by Havelock North but special congratulations to our own Taradale team (R Falvey, P Lamason, P Townrow) who won the other section. Gary de Ridder replaced Ray Falvey on Day 2. Our other team of A Boardman, C Downing and D Roberts came second in this section. Well done, boys!

Practice Makes Perfect
Practice sessions develop and build on existing skills. Match play is where those skills will be demonstrated. Quality practice induces and requires high levels of concentration. This will flow on into match performance. Focus attention on developing sound routines until they become automatic.

Bowlers need to practise skills on a daily basis. It is only by doing this that one can become good at the skill.

An Extra Bowl
In a game of 2x4x2 pairs some time ago one lead played three bowls instead of two.
What should happen to that 3rd bowl?
Does it stay on the rink or is it removed and played again?

Law 47.1     Playing out of turn
1  If a player plays out of turn, the opposing skip can stop the bowl and return it to the player to play it in the proper order.
2  If the bowl has come to rest and has not disturbed the head, the opposing skip should choose whether to: leave the head as it is and have their team play two bowls one after the other to get back to the proper order of play; or return the bowl and get back to the proper order of play.
3  If the bowl has disturbed the head, the opposing skip should choose whether to: leave the disturbed head as it is and have their team play two bowls one after the other to get back to the proper order of play; replace the head in its former position, return the bowl and go back to the proper order of play; or declare the end dead.

WORLD BOWLS HAS BEGUN
The much anticipated World Bowls 2008, is underway. On Saturday morning, a colourful opening ceremony, welcomed the 28 competing countries in perfect conditions. A traditional Maori welcome preceded the official opening by the Governor-General,  the Honourable Anand Satyanand, PCNZM, QSO,  but the good crowd most enjoyed the march into the finals green by the teams resplendent in the national colours, with their national flags.

REFLECTIONS OF A NEW BOWLER
When I contemplated playing bowls, I knew not what to do.
About how to enter a game, I didn't have a clue.
I arrived in time for my first game, I think they called it fours.
Took all the bowls out of my bag, I didn't know the laws,
The other guys explained to me, "You've made a silly blue."
I said, "what's the point of having four if you're only using two."

My opponent whispered in my ear, "In time you'll work it out,
But here's a thing you'll learn right now, it's up to you to shout."
I rushed into the bar and yelled, "Eight pots of beer, I think,
You'd better make it Tui, is it the stuff they drink?"
I brought the tray back to the green and handed drinks around,
The coin was tossed, the mat went down, my coin was never found.

WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SENIOR SINGLES:
Last Wednesday Maureen Parsons, Noeline Gardiner and Mandy Boyd completed the Women's Championship Senior Singles. Those who were able to watch the games would have been impressed with the standard of play. Good draw bowling, astute run bowling when the situation demanded it and strategic bowl placement were all evident. Maureen and Noeline played out the semifinal. A late burst by Maureen could not quite peg back Noeline who won the semifinal and then went on to play Mandy in the final. It is a tribute to the calibre of our Junior bowlers that two of them fought out the Championship final. Congratulations to Mandy on a well-deserved victory and to Noeline for reaching the finals.

DORCHESTER JUNIOR 5'S:
Bowls Taradale entered three teams in this event last weekend. Games were played  at Taradale and Port Ahuriri on Saturday with the top two teams from each venue coming together on Sunday for a "round robin" play-off. Our teams did well but missed out on making the top four - Bay View (two teams), Heretaunga and Havelock North. Those Juniors who played in this event will learn from the experience and be better
bowlers as a result. The Junior 5's was won by Bay View 'A' and the runner-up was Heretaunga 'A'.

If you want to win
you must practise

With so many bowlers currently taking part in Club Championships and inter-club events the importance of fitness rears its head. Often we are OK for one or two games then the wheels fall off. You have to be fit to play bowls well.

FITNESS is all about:
Endurance
Flexibility
Strength

Strength training, while not of significance in bowling, still has its place. (Abdominal muscle strengthening - care of the back). Players should include regular WALKING to build endurance. STRETCHING EXERCISES is also recommended to promote ease of movement. Lengthy bowling activity places heavy demand on joint and muscular action.

HALF IN THE DITCH - HALF OUT OF THE DITCH
When I was playing at Bay View a short time ago a bowl came so close to the ditch that I thought it might sit on a toucher already in the ditch. If it had stopped partly on the green and partly on the top of the toucher in the ditch would the bowl be alive or dead?

Law 27        Dead bowl
A bowl is not a dead bowl if:

·
it is carried by a player while inspecting the head;

·
in its original course, it comes to rest within the boundaries of the rink even though it may have passed outside a side boundary of the rink during its course;

·
it is a toucher which rebounds from the face of the bank onto the rink of play;

·
it is a toucher which comes to rest on top of the jack or another toucher at rest in the ditch; or

·

it comes to rest on top of the jack or any bowls that are at rest within the boundaries of the rink.

ETIQUETTE: Remember the mat belongs to the player who has just delivered a bowl. He/she has the right to stay on the mat until the bowl stops. When you are on the mat waiting to play your bowl please check no one is delivering a bowl on the adjacent rink. There should not be too much talking behind the mat – it can disrupt the player’s concentration.

REFLECTIONS OF A NEW BOWLER
continued ...

You only had to buy two drinks you stupid bloody cluck."
"You should have told me sooner pal, I could've saved ten bucks."
We all shook hands, the day was fine, the green was running fast,
"I've never played this game before, do you mind if I go last?"
The skipper looked me up and down, he began to fear the worst,
"If your a novice bowler mate, it's best if you go first."

I took a run up to the mat as nervous as could be,
It hit his foot, ran up his leg, rebounding off his knee.
"You're just a little quick my son", I saw my skipper mime,
"You've got another bowl mate, try underarm this time."
My team mates tried to counsel me, "Calm down, you'll get the ticket."
I've just turned sixty two ," I said, "and just retired from cricket."

Women's Championship Pairs:
The Women's Pairs began in early December and the finalists (Fay Johnson & Wanda Guatieri and Maureen Pederson & Karen Grainger) were decided but had to wait till yesterday to complete the Championship. In overcast conditions the final was played with Fay and Wanda emerging the victors. Congratulations Fay and Wanda for winning the Championship. Well done Maureen and Karen for being such tough opponents.

Women's Championship Junior Pairs:
While Maria Sharapova was pumping the air and grunting her way through the final of the Australian Tennis Open our Junior women were quietly going about competing for the Championship Pairs title. By the close of play three teams were left in contention; Mandy Boyd & Barbara Exeter had two lives intact while one lifers included Lois Hook & Nancy Dunnett and Noeline Gardiner & Colleen McLaughlin. After a delayed start on Sunday games got under way. Lois & Nancy were on a roll. Firstly they beat Noeline & Colleen (15-15 going in to the last end), then in another tight finish they won against Mandy & Barbara (17-17 going in to the last end). These same two teams (Lois v Mandy) will now play off in the final

The final will be played next Tuesday (29th) morning at 9.00

HAWKES BAY "DORCHESTER" OPEN SINGLES

Dorchester Women's Open Pairs:
What a great result this turned out to be for Bowls Taradale. The Women's Open pairs took place during the week at Bowls Napier and at Kia Toa. We had only two teams entered (Julie Haslett & Diane Mitchell, Karen Grainger and Wilma Ennor) and Karen and Wilma almost won. They reached the final and the game was so close an extra end had to be played. Congratulations to
Colleen Ferrick and Pam Rowlands from Bowls Heretaunga for winning the title but Karen and Wilma can feel so proud for coming this close.

Back To Basics
At the end of the day it is all about skills. The team or the player who has more skills than their opposition will mostly win. Bowlers need to become more aware of the importance of being able to perform the basics to a very high standard. It is all about the basics, knowing them and executing them. Only by revisiting them again and again in training sessions will the bowler truly establish the foundations for consistency of performance whereby their true potential in the sport can be achieved. There is no magic formula nor is there a quick fix. It takes a bucket full of self-discipline, commitment, passion and determination to be a highly successful bowler. Without these qualities the true potential of any bowler will seldom reach fruition and they will be left to wonder why. Good enough but not good enough.

WHAT DO YOU WANT?
WHY DO YOU WANT IT?
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GET IT?
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START?

A PLAYER DELIVERS A BOWL BEFORE THE PREVIOUS BOWL HAS STOPPED
You should know that the mat is yours until your bowl has stopped. If however a player delivers a bowl before the previous bowl has come to rest what should an umpire do?

Law 34     Order of play
1       The leads should play their bowls in turn, followed by each pair of players in their order of play.
2       If a player delivers a bowl before the previous bowl has come to rest, the umpire should, on the first occasion, warn the player in the presence of the skip and advise the manager or the coach when they are present that a warning has been given. On each occasion after this, the umpire should declare the player’s bowl dead. If that bowl has disturbed the head, the opposing skip or opponent in Singles should choose whether to:

·         replace the head;
·         leave the head as altered; or
·         declare the end dead.

ETIQUETTE:  Lie the mat straight in line with the number on the bank and the centre of the mat. Hand your opponent’s bowl to him/her or place it next to the mat. Stand at least 1 metre behind the mat. The bowls on the mat should be to the rear and side of the mat. When they are directly behind the mat they can be a danger to those players who step back after delivering a bowl.
Miscellaneous
HOSE OUT - SO YOU DON'T HOSE OFF
If you think you are the last to use the green would you please  put the hose out in the centre before leaving. Likewise if you think visitors will be the last ones playing please ask them to do the same. Several nights ago the hose was left on the bank. We now have the cleanest seats of any club in The Bay.

REFLECTIONS OF A NEW BOWLER
continued ...

If I played a bowl that fell well short the skip went off his rocker.
But when he did a similar thing, he was trying to play a blocker.
If I played a bowl well past the head, he said, "You'll get the knack."
If the skip did the same as me, "It's in case they trail the jack."
"Now listen old son", he said, his face was stern and gritty,
"Your job in this game of bowls is drawing to the kitty".

I apologised for my mistakes and took in what he said,
"I'm sorry Mr Skipper, sir, I must have lost my head."
My first attempt at playing bowls was really quits a farce,
The skipper kept on telling me, "You've got to take some grass".
I stood and watched the other bloke as he took his turn to bowl,
It was then I learnt that taking grass was not the sort you roll.

World Bowls
TWO GOLDS FOR NZ
Black Jacks pair, Jo Edwards and Val Smith, have become double world champions by winning the gold medal at the World Bowls Championships in Christchurch on Saturday. Edwards and Smith beat England 28 – 8 in a one-sided final to complete a golden day for New Zealand bowls.

Gary Lawson’s team had previously won the world title in the fours by beating Australia.

Women's Championship Junior Pairs:
Last weekend the Junior Women's Pairs was not quite concluded. Lois & Nancy Dunnett had to play off in the finals against last year's winners, Mandy Boyd and Barbara Exeter. It is a tribute to our club that so many spectators took the time to watch, encourage and enjoy this Championship final. The semifinal went down to the wire but the final was more clearcut. Congratulations to Mandy and Barbara for emerging the Championship winners. Lois and Nancy can be encouraged by beating the eventual winners once and making them play a second round. Well done.

Women's Championship Junior Singles:
One week ago we had the women's junior Pairs, now we have just witnessed the women's Junior Singles. The twelve junior women who began the competition Saturday morning soon learned there is no such thing as a certainty in bowls. By the close of Day 1 only five players were left; Colleen McLaughlin still had two  lives intact while those with one life included Tessa Hocking, Sheryl Glock, and Lois Hook.

Day 2 was just as intriguing as Day 1. Lois beat Colleen, Tessa beat both Sheryl and Colleen so the final was between Lois and Tessa. The final was long, exciting and displayed a high standard of bowling. Lois emerged the winner but not before Tessa staged a determined comeback. Congratulations to both players.

HB Open Fours:
Five teams (20 players) from Taradale took part this weekend in the HB Open Fours at Omarunui Bowling Club. By nightfall only two Taradale teams were still in contention. They were Jon O'Shea (Jim Fitzsimons, Paul Selby, Murray Glassey) and Bruce Mitchell (Ray Falvey, Peter Fletcher, John McLaughlin). Both teams battled valiantly on Day 2 but went under.

Relax
The ability to remain calm and relaxed when the game is not going well is a skill that needs to be learned and practised. Some techniques that can help are:
1. Deep breathing
2. Breathing by numbers (in 1 out 2 up to 10)
3. Visualise a place of calm (beach, garden, lake, stream, a quiet place)
4. Progressive relaxation (centering, draining the tension away)
5. Adopt a passive attitude.
6. A physically comfortable position.
7. Self talk. Relax mind and muscles.
8. Think of a number, word or symbol to dwell on.

THE WRONG TEAM DELIVERS THE JACK:
What should happen when it is discovered that the wrong team delivered the jack?

Law 22    Delivering the jack
5 If, before a bowl has been played by each team, a player notices that the wrong team has delivered the jack, the correct team will re-start the end.
6 If, after a bowl has been played by each team, a player notices that the wrong team has delivered the jack, play in that end should continue in that order.

Etiquette - If you are waiting for your opponent to deliver the last bowl wait until he/she moves off the mat before placing the mat on the bank. After the last bowl has been delivered wait for him/her to move up the green before you move off.

REFLECTIONS OF A NEW BOWLER
continued ...

I took my stance upon the mat, "I've got good grass I think?".
But the bowl turned the other way and drew shot on next doors rink.
I remembered reading a book, how to sort my bias out,
The little ring to the inside, now I know what it's about!.
The game progressed, we had a ball, I didn't keep the score.
I guess you lose some interest when you continually drop a four.

But we made a mighty comeback, our team was on the mend,
The score was locked at 20 all as we began the last end.
The skipper pulled us all aside and with a cheeky grin,
Said, "Don't know how you blokes feel, but I'm out here to win".
He glared me sternly in the eye, his steely glare could cut yer,
My bowl went down, "You beauty mate, a resting bloody toucher".

HB Men's Open Fours:
When the previous newsletter was printed I did not know who won the HB Men's Open Fours.
The winning team was Bowls Napier:  Graeme Wagg (s), Ken Smith (3), Pat O'Neil (2), Dave Stevenson (1)

Hawkes Bay Junior Singles (men and women)
Last weekend was a full one for our Junior bowlers. Sixteen bowlers from Bowls Taradale took part (what a great effort) - eight men and eight women.
Three women made post-section play; Colleen McLaughlin, Sheryl Glock, Mandy Boyd. Not only did Mandy make the final but she won it. At one stage she was about 10 shots behind her opponent. To come from so far behind and still win shows something special. Congratulations, Mandy.

In the men's section the magical word was again three; Dave Jenkins, Dave Roberts and Russell Turner all made Day 2 but each succumbed and did not get past the quarter finals. The final between Byron Brook (Heretaunga) and Ben Sale (Bay View) was won by Byron.

Well done to all sixteen who took part. It is better to have tried and lost than never to have tried at all.

DELIVERY OF THE JACK:
Delivering the jack seems to worry a few bowlers - so I am repeating these notes

Anchor foot is placed on the centre of the mat
Hold jack on the main fingers with thumb on top and wrist locked
Deliver the jack using the same action as for a bowl

The pre-shot routine is important

PRE-SHOT ROUTINE
Position the jack in the hand
Identify the line
Visualise the delivery (line, weight)
Confirm the line and focus point
Move onto the mat

Weather:
Hardly a week goes by without someone commenting on the "weather" link at the top of this page. Many are finding it very useful. If you have not used it yet click on the weather link and see for yourself.
Foot-faulting:
Last week someone mentioned to another bowler that she thought she might be foot-faulting because she was lifting her foot off the mat before delivering the bowl. Does the foot have to be in contact with the mat at the moment of the bowl's release? Will part of the foot be enough? What if the foot is off the mat but above it?

Law 20  Position on the mat
Before delivery a player should be standing on the mat with one foot fully on the mat. At the moment they deliver the jack or a bowl, the player should have all or part of one foot on or above the mat.

Etiquette - People play bowls for enjoyment and it will be more pleasurable if they are mindful of their opponents. Be ready. Always be on time for the start of play and for the start of each game. Start and finish a game with a handshake.

REFLECTIONS OF A NEW BOWLER
continued ...

I tried in vain to hide my glee, I think my bowls a winner,
and the skip was turning cartwheels screaming, "This guy is no beginner"
Although they tried to shift my bowl with shots of no real class,
Our skip was keeping well away by taking heaps of grass.
My bowl stayed there, we won the match and ambled off the green,
And i knew it was the greatest piece of ass this game as ever seen.

We talked about it afterwards, how we won by just one shot,
But the best time came when all those blokes shouted back that bloody pot.
I took time out to find a coach who taught me by the letter,
I'm pleased to say I've learned a lot and now I bowl much better.
The years have passed, I'm hooked on bowls, though not achieving fame,
I just tell all and sundry, how I won that bloody game....

  • The following weekend I will be in Palmerston North

  • The week after that I will be in Tauranga

If anyone wants to send me any news items I will gladly include them in the next newsletter. I am sure other club members will appreciate your efforts.

The other team was Murray Glassey, Jim Fitzsimons, Bruce Mitchell and Brian Annear
DORCHESTER WOMEN'S OPEN TRIPLES
Maureen Pederson's team (Karen Grainger, Wilma Ennor) competed during the week in the Dorchester Women's Open Triples (at Kia Toa and Heretaunga)

If you want to win
you must practise

Positive Thoughts Are Important
You can influence your performance by your thoughts. Be aware of what is going on without focusing entirely on what you are doing.  (A pianist can lose the ability to play by focusing whole of attention only on what the fingers are doing.) The physical skill must be learned and practised until it is an automatic process. Worry (eg. about poor last bowl) tends to increase what might go wrong. Thoughts should all be directed toward building confidence and self-esteem.

Focus on the task- the here and now.  Identify the task then do it.

You are measuring and a bowl is removed prematurely
I am not in the habit of having arguments on the bowling green but last week was an exception. After an end had been completed in a game of triples the other No 2 and I agreed on two bowls in our favour. Two more bowls were close and I said I was going to measure both. While I was measuring the first bowl one of the opponents removed the second bowl because he thought it was not in the count.

What happens now? Do we put the moved bowl back and measure? Do we claim it without putting it back?

Law 39  The shot
2       No bowl should be moved until the opponents have agreed whether it is a shot or not
3       As the shots are agreed, each shot bowl can be removed from the head.

4       Shot bowls can be placed in a group where they will not interfere with measuring.

5       If shot bowls have been placed in a group, the number of bowls in the group should be agreed by the opponents.

6       The skips should be told (or have signalled to them) the number of shots scored in each end.

I don't think the points above fully cover our case scenario but .... we claimed the four bowls

Etiquette - STAND STILL ON THE HEAD:
Stand still on the head till the players have delivered their bowls. You can indicate with your foot where you want the bowl to finish but remove your foot as soon as the bowl is greened.

Coaching Lessons For New Bowlers
Wilma is giving coaching lessons for the next six Saturday mornings (9.30 - 11.00)  If you are a new bowler, or if you know of any new bowler who would like to use this generous offer, you are welcome to attend.
Size 0 (or 1) Bowls
Do you have a set of small bowls that you are prepared to lend Wilma for 6 weeks or so. She has a young boy who is keen to try bowling but the bowls she has are too big. Please give Wilma a call if you can help. Thanks.

TARANAKI on SATURDAY 23rd & SUNDAY 24th FEBRUARY at TAKARO BC - PALMERSTON NORTH are on the Bowls HB website (see link above)
MATES 'N BOWLS
Games commenced last Wednesday evening and will continue until 2nd April. Everything I heard about this venture was positive; "To some it might look like a shambles - but those taking part loved it" one bowler was overheard to say. One participant arrived home and uttered the word "awesome" and next week plans to take another family member with her. Well done, the organisers.

Happy St Patrick's day, everyone

I am sorry I have been "off the air" recently but the past few weeks have been busy. Sarah's wedding was great - all the kids were together for the first time in about 20 years and there was much to catch up on. Family and guests stayed on for a few days. After that I went to Palmerston North to play in the New Zealand Community Trust and Interclub events (results are on the Bowls HB website). This past week was spent bowling in Tauranga. Ron and Noelene Gardiner plus Colleen and I took part in the BOP Annual Mixed Fours. From the 70+ teams competing we got into the top 28. In four days we played 11 games and we won 7. The competition winner won 9 games so we think we did OK with our 7 wins.
I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the next few items - but I tried
Club Men's Junior Singles
The Men's Junior Singles final will be played some time in April. The two finalists are Gary deRidder and Dave Roberts.
Men's Junior Pairs
This is down to the finals and is due to be played on Thursday afternoon. Russell Turner & Dave Fussell (substitute for Gary deRidder) will play Dave Jenkins & Alex Jones.
Senior Men's Singles
This too has reached the finals - Ray Falvey will play Jack Halka.
Men's Colts Singles
This event is for men who are Year 1 and Year 2 bowlers. The large number of entrants in itself is a healthy sign for our club. By the close of Day 1 four players remained. Dave Roberts still has both lives intact. Players with one life are Richard Hocking (Sen), Graeme Gardner and Dave Jones.
Champion of Champions Men's Two Bowl Triples
The COC Men's Triples took place on Saturday 8th March at Bowls Heretaunga. Representing Bowls Taradale were Frank Grantham, Graeme (Pedro) Pedersen, and Ray Falvey. Our team played well but went under to a team from Havelock North. The winning team was Heretaunga.
District Shield
For those unfamiliar with the District Shield it is an annual event involving men from every Hawkes Bay club. Each of the eleven participating clubs fielded a 10 man team (singles, pairs, triples, fours). The winner of each of the three sections, plus the next best overall team, qualified for post-section play on Sunday. Taradale was fast out of the blocks on Saturday with an impressive 8 wins and only 1 loss. This guaranteed them a place in post section play on Sunday. Teams qualifying in post-section play were Taradale, Waipukurau, Bay View and Napier. Congratulations to Taradale for a comprehensive win. Going in to the last round Taradale needed only one more win to take the trophy. They finished winning each game in that round. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time in years that Bay View has reached Day 2. Their competitive play was matched by the great club support that was evident for all to see. Well done, Bay View.

The winning Taradale team consisted of:
Singles - M Glassey
Pairs - B Annear, F Grantham
Triples - C Salmon   R Falvey, B Mitchell (s)
Fours - J McLaughlin, D Millar, P Young, P Selby (s)

Ladies Pennants
Fifteen of our ladies players competed last weekend in the Ladies Pennants at Bowls Napier. Competition was strong and all out teams can feel pleased with their standard of play. Special mention should be made of Wilma Ennor (s), Sherril Glock (2) and Maureen Pedersen (lead) who finished runner-up to the winning team Omarunui.

GOAL SETTING IS IMPORTANT
Any athlete without specific performance goals, training goals and practice goals might be going somewhere but is probably going nowhere. Aim at nothing and that is mostly what you get. At best a ship without a rudder.

Scoreboard v Scorecard
If you are playing in a competition in which both scorecards and scoreboards are being used Law 37.3 has this to say: (I have condensed it a little)

If a scoreboard is used as well as a score card, the second of the team which won the toss for opening play should update the scoreboard and the opposing second should deal with the score card.
winner of toss = board
loser of toss = card

The way I remember is to think of a girl's name "Elsie" (or LC)  L=loser C=Card

Etiquette
STANDING ON THE HEAD
:
(a) Stand at least 2 metres behind the bowls on the head making sure you do not kick any bowls accidentally – if so, your opposing player replaces it.
(b) If you are standing on the head – keep still.

Markers for Champion of Champion Junior Ladies Singles
On Wed 26th March Taradale is hosting this event. Play will commence in the afternoon and markers are required. If you feel you can help please put your name on the sheet in the club room. Your assistance is very much appreciated.

Bowls New Zealand (from Bowls NZ website)
Bowls New Zealand's vision is to be the best bowling country. New Zealand has a long held tradition of bowls and many bowling clubs have been in existence for over 100 years. At the last count in April 2006, an estimated 90,000 New Zealanders play bowls as a club member or socially. Currently, bowls is experiencing a surge of popularity, attracting new and younger players. This reflects the ease of which people can participate in the sport and contributes to Bowls New Zealand’s mission to create an exceptional sporting experience that is enjoyable, entertaining and accessible to all New Zealanders.

Have you got what it takes to play in our social summer league - Mates In Bowls?
All you need is a few good mates, a good sense of humour and flat soled shoes.  We've got awesome bar prices (to help quench your thirst) and if you've never played before, don't worry, we'll guide you and even provide the bowls!  Even better, it doesn't cost a fortune and anyone can play!

The invitation above was issued by our club to Napierites earlier in the season and quite a few people took up the offer. Our thanks go to the enthusiasm of Wilma and her helpers for getting this off the ground. If you want to see photos of these bowlers in action click here

The final of the Men's Junior Pairs was played last Thursday afternoon. Russell Turner & Dave Fussell (substitute for Gary deRidder) played Dave Jenkins & Alex Jones.  At the half way point Dave J and Alex were in front but steady consistent play by Russell and Dave F saw them creep into the lead and stay there. Congratulations to Russell and Dave F for  winning this title. Well done to Dave and Alex - worthy contenders.

Kittyhawk National Under 20's Singles
Tessa Hocking and Mandy Boyd have been in Auckland this weekend playing in the Kittyhawk National Under 20's Singles. Each player won representation by beating other contenders in the whole of Region 3. It says something about the calibre of these two young women when we heard  that both qualified to play in the final round of eight at the Nationals. That means they are among the best Under 20 year olds in New Zealand. Neither Tessa nor Mandy won the singles title but each is to be congratulated on the hard work they put in beforehand and the standard of play each displayed. Your club is very proud of you. Well done! The women's final was won by

MENTAL SKILLS TRAINING
All sport is both mental and physical so training the mind as well as the body is important. Lawn Bowls may best be described as a low intensity long endurance sport. Therefore the ability to maintain focus or concentration over a period of time is a skill that needs to be included in training programmes.

SELF TALK
Many bowlers use this to help their focus or concentration. It can also be used to relieve pressure and maintain that all-important calm, relaxed, in-control state, which is so important when performing a set of skills.

Result of an end
Law 39

Last week I heard a little disquiet about the result of one end played in a recent game of bowls. One player mentioned the result of the end then kicked the bowls away before the other player had time to agree or disagree. This is what the law says

No bowl should be moved until the opponents have agreed whether it is a shot or not, except where a bowl has to be moved so that another bowl can be measured.
As the shots are agreed, each shot bowl can be removed from the head. Shot bowls can be placed in a group where they will not interfere with measuring. If shot bowls have been placed in a group, the number of bowls in the group should be agreed by the opponents. The skips and the seconds or the marker where appropriate should be told (or have signalled to them) the number of shots scored in each end.

Etiquette
WHEN AN END IS KILLED:

Please carry the bowls when returning them after a killed end.  Do not kick them up the green

No Roll-up on Thursday ???
It is highly likely there will be no roll-up this coming Thursday because of work that is due to be done on B Green. This may change but be warned.
Mixed 3 Bowl Pairs Tournament
Our club is holding a mixed 3 bowl pairs tournament (mufti) on the weekend of 12-13 April. The cost is $5 per player and the tournament is limited to the first 32 teams to apply - so don't delay. Day 1 will be a qualifying day and will consist of 4 games each of 1 hour 30 minutes. On Day 2 teams will be divided into two sections and four games will be played. There will be prizes for 1st and 2nd in each section. An entry form is on the club notice board.
Men's Senior Singles Final
The final of the men's senior singles will be played on Saturday March 29th at 9.00 am. Finalists are Ray Falvey and Jack Halka. We wish them both well.
Colts Singles
I think (not sure) that this will also be on Saturday March 29th (9.00 am or 1.00 pm)
Centre Games (COC) at Bowls Taradale this coming week
If you want to see some good bowling come down to out greens this week. Women's Champion of Champions Fours and Junior Singles will be played out Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

March 26 -  Womens COC Junior Singles 1.00pm @ Bowls Taradale

Improper Delivery of the Jack (Another change - it applies only to time limit games - not to Club or Centre Championships)
World Bowls has agreed to the following experiment in domestic competitions
If the jack is delivered improperly the opposing skip may direct the lead
- where to place the mat, then
- where to place the jack
Coaching about to Finish
Saturday morning coaching will stop next Saturday morning. I am sure the many who have availed themselves of this service are grateful for the coaching they received. Thank you, coaches, your work is a big help to the club.

The Wailing Wall

1. They beat their breasts and cried out loud,
As they faced the northern wall,
Where the selectors had placed the team selections
On the notice board was their call.
2. There were some that swore and some that cried,
And some who stood and muttered
Some were proud, some were coy,
And others merely stuttered.

3. There were voices raised in anger,
Shrill screams split the air,
There were those who didn't say a thing,
Because they really didn't care.

4. "I wont play with him", one said,
"He's a bloody hopeless skip."
And one who very quietly said,
"It's time I took my trip."

5. There were many self selections,
There were lots of "bloody hells!"
There weren't very many
who said the Selectors had done well.

6. The players knew who should be there,
They knew who to pick,
Just ask them when you hear them say,
"That selector is a $$##@!."
7. Each year the tears get deeper,
As on the floor they fall,
From those who stand in anguish
Before the wailing wall.

Champion of Champions - Congratulation Bay View (four COC wins)
Women's Fours
Sue Brock (Skip), Maree Turner, Del Girven, Lynda Boyd
Our Fours team came out of the blocks running. They despatched Waipukurau comfortably then played and beat Port Ahuriri. In the semifinals they came up against the formidable fours team from Heretaunga. With one end to go the scores were tied but the final end saw Heretaunga gain the advantage and take the win. Well done Sue, Maree, Del and Lynda. The final was between Heretaunga and Bay View. Congratulations to Bay View for winning the COC title.

Women's Junior Singles
Lois Hook
Eight clubs took part in the COC Women's Junior singles last Wednesday afternoon. Club member Lois Hook defeated Omarunui in her first game then, in a tight finish, edged out Havelock North's Jan Hickman. The final between Lois and Mere Nepia from Bay View took part on Thursday morning. I was unable to see the game but the final score was 21-16. From what I was told Lois was very competitive, her bowling was accurate and the game could have gone either way. Well done Lois and congratulations to Mere Nepia on her win.

Men's Senior Pairs
Jon O'Shea (s), Frank Grantham
At the Havelock North bowling green last Saturday our Men's Senior Pair team of Jon O'Shea and Frank Grantham almost took out the COC title. They reached the final and just went under to Bay View 14-11. Well done Jon and Frank for such a stirling effort.

Men's Junior Pairs
Russell Turner, David Fussell
Once again Bay View are to be congratulated on winning yet another COC title. Russell Turner and David Fussell spent the day at Heretaunga playing winning Junior pairs combinations from other clubs. Russell and Dave reached the final but succumbed to Bay View. Well done for getting that far.

Colts Singles
This competition, which had previously been reduced to four players (Dave Roberts, Dave Jones, Alex Jones, Rick Hocking), continued last Saturday. The final between Dave Roberts and Dave Jones was won by Dave Roberts. Congratulations to Dave who went through with both lives intact and scored a well-deserved victory. Well done, Dave Jones, in reaching the final - no mean achievement.

Dave Jones, Dave Roberts

Men's Senior Singles Final
The final of the men's senior singles between Ray Falvey and Jack Halka was played on Saturday. What was expected to be a closely fought final finished up one-sided (but that's bowls - as we all know). Jack dominated the game and deserved to win. Congratulations Jack on taking out the final and well done to Ray for getting further than every other senior singles player.

The Mental Picture
Imagery is probably the most neglected and under developed ability we have. Jack Nicklaus says hitting a good golf shot combines 10% swing, 40% set-up and 50% consists of the mental picture one has of how the swing should occur. He talks of movies in his head when he plays and says that he never hits a shot even in practice without having an in-focus picture of how it will occur. Imagery is a like creating images in the mind of doing something perfectly. It can be practised anywhere or at anytime of the day.

Law 37        Players and their duties

The skip  (abbreviated)
The skip will have sole charge of the team and all players in the team should follow the skip’s instructions.

The skip should decide all disputed points with the opposing skip

If the skips cannot reach agreement on any disputed point, they should ask the umpire to make a decision. The umpire’s decision is final.
If there is no umpire, the skips should choose a competent neutral person to act as the umpire.
Skips can, at any time, delegate their own powers and any of their own duties to any other members of the team as long as they tell the opposing skip immediately.

Etiquette
FOLLOWING YOUR BOWL UP THE RINK:
After you have delivered a bowl and before it has come to rest you have two options.
If you want to track your bowl's progress you must be behind the head as it stops.
In other words you must beat it to the head.
If you don't go to the head you must be behind the mat as your bowl stops.

Wilma and Craig
In a few short days Wilma and Craig take off on their big adventure - Spain, Italy, Mediterranean, and more. Your Bowls Taradale mates (apart from feeling jealous) hope you both have a marvellous trip and the weather is stunning everywhere you go. May your days be filled with awesome memories - and you come back to us safe, sunburnt and energised.
Mixed 3 Bowl Pairs Tournament (Reminder No 2)
Our club is holding a mixed 3 bowl pairs tournament (mufti) on the weekend of 12-13 April. The cost is $5 per player and the tournament is limited to the first 32 teams to apply - so don't delay. Day 1 will be a qualifying day and will consist of 4 games each of 1 hour 30 minutes. On Day 2 teams will be divided into two sections and four games will be played. WHITES OR MUFTI
Lady bowlers come and go
Dress rules go on forever
How dare you try to make a change
No never, never, never.

The men think we are a joke
and look like mobs of sheep
With madam snapping at our heels
It's to the rules you'll keep.

The young are keen to play the game
But won't of course unless
We put some colour on our frame
And try to change our dress.

The men indeed have got more sense
Their rules are not so stuffy
They have more fun and play the game
you've guessed it; dressed in 'mufti'.

Champion of Champions
Women's Triples
Sue Brock (s), Wilma Ennor, Lynda Boyd
Last Monday our Taradale team of Sue, Wilma and Lynda won their first game against Bay View but were beaten in the second game by the eventual runner-up, Heretaunga. The title was won by Omarunui.

Women's Singles
Mandy Boyd
Not many clubs can claim to have a Junior bowler competing for this title but that is what Mandy is. To compound matters her first game was against the eventual Runner-up, Nancy Weaver. Mandy acquitted herself well and at the three-quarter mark was level before Nancy nudged ahead. Well done Mandy. The title went to Raelene Cronin from Napier.

Men's Fours
Due to unforeseen circumstance Taradale was unable to take part in this event. The final between Napier and Heretaunga was won by Heretaunga 23-7.

If you want to win
you must practise

THE LEAD EVERYBODY WANTS
Unless you are asked by your skip to roll the jack a specified distance, endeavour to send it to a length that suits you – and continue to do so unless asked to change. If your skip gives instructions to roll it a certain length you must try to obey. As a right handed player, you would stand on the left side of the mat to roll the jack straight down the line.

You now have the job of getting the bowl as close to the jack as possible. After an end or two you may decide to use just one side of the green, that is, forehand one way and backhand the other because the width and pace of the green will be much the same both ways. If you make that decision don’t change during that game. A lead should become machine-like. When you do it is very satisfying but you cannot maintain consistency if you chop and change from one side to the other.  If a bowl close to the jack looks in the way more often than not you will miss it. If you go inside it you will get shot, if you go around it you could get shot and if you rest it you will have at least a good second shot. And no skip will be unhappy with a good second shot. There are other players to follow you and it isn’t the end of the world if you don’t get shot, but by staying on the hand you know you will have a better chance of getting a close bowl.

There are others in your team. Your job is to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible. Leads are expected to help kick the bowls back after an end has been declared.

JACK LOW OR JACK HIGH
You are standing on the mat watching your bowl roll towards the jack. Sometimes a bowl finishes past the jack, sometimes it stops before the jack. If your bowl is 1 metre short of the jack is it high or low?
